Aethusa cynapium
(Fools Parsley)
Aethusa resembled the common name of the pretty herb she was named after (Fools Parsley) that is to say, she was a foolish young lady. She was also an intelligent individual. Aethusa was the first in the history of her family to apply and be accepted to university. Her family was a working class family, labourers who migrated from Belfast, Northern Ireland, eager to flee the bigotry in a secular society. Her parents were very proud of their youngest daughter and she was the main topic of conversation to anyone who cared to listen. However, the praise made Aethusa feel awkward and in a strange way foolish and dumb and she felt she was unable to meet the demands put upon her, by her family. Despite her intelligence university was no bed of roses for Aethusa, she had to study long and hard and as exam time drew close and the Pressure mounted, the brain fag set in, then unfortunately she became even more foolish, which actually bordered on idiotic in extreme states, There was a degree of mental confusion, her brain and nervous systems were affected, and she was unable to fix her attention for long periods, there was a definite incapacity to think., which was extremely counter productive to revising for exams. Aethusa’s anxiety about the future, specifically the anticipation about the exams (ailments from anticipation) became more acute as the day of the exam neared. She reached desperation point when she was a wash in an examination funk and she could not think from over study. And to add insult to injury during these times she could not sleep, she was fearful to close her eyes less she never wake up She would lie on the bottom bunk bed in the box room, the small bedroom over the stairs she shared with her elder sister, grasping the bed springs under the side of the mattress stifling the desire to jump out of the bed, that or the nearby window. She would convince herself that to do such an extreme thing as to jump out of an upstairs window she must be delirious which was oddly better for perspiration. And when Aethusa did eventually fall asleep and wake up be it in the morning or to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, she would immediately scan her surroundings as she experienced a disconcerting feeling of being lost (Del lost on waking). Aethusa suffered many delusions that would run amuck in her mind. ...........
