Abstract
Objective: Furuncules (boils) are a more florid form of folliculitis affecting the face, neck, buttocks and axillae. The present observational study on furunculosis was undertaken with nine predefined trial medicines to arrive at a group of useful homeopathic medicines for the treatment of furunculosis.
Methods: A prospective, multicentre observational study was conducted by Central Council for Research in Homeopathy at its various Institutes and Units in India during October 2005- September 2008. Five hundred and thirty nine patients of all age groups presenting with symptoms of furunculosis were included in the study but 397 patients were regularly followed up. Predefined trial medicines were given as per individualization on holistic principles of Homeopathy. A furunculosis symptom score (FSS) was designed to assess the severity of illness and the data was analyzed using SPSS version 16.
Results: There was significant difference in the mean total FSS between baseline and end of the treatment favoring homeopathic care (p=0.000 <0.05, CI: 4.25-4.67). Eighty five percent (n=338) of the patient population needed the following nine trial medicines: Hepar sulphuris (n=112), Antimonium crudum (n=103), Sulphur (n=69) and Calcarea carbonica (n=54). The results were found to be statistically significant (p <0.05) with the nine predefined trial medicines.
Conclusion: This multicentre observational study reproves the usefulness of homeopathic medicines in furunculosis. Controlled study should be undertaken to further support the efficacy and effectiveness of homeopathic medicines in the treatment of furunculosis
